Finally, XR is becoming an important tool for retail.
Cruise ships aren’t just floating hotels. They’re also floating malls. Larger ships can host anywhere from 2 to 13 stores, with a focus on luxury goods, jewelry, watches, and duty-free products.
Increasingly, cruise lines are integrating XR into the retail experience, allowing passengers to explore products virtually, view luxury goods collections in 3D, or engage with brand storytelling in new ways before making a purchase.
Airlines have long struggled with in-flight retail, with many, including Lufthansa, recently shutting down traditional duty-free onboard shopping programs due to declining demand. But XR could open the door to a new form of immersive, personalized retail that actually fits modern passenger behaviors.
In short: XR isn’t just about “cool tech.” It’s a smart, strategic lever to overcome the constraints of fixed assets and to unlock new retail revenue streams.
And if cruises can do it, why can’t airlines?

Airlines and XR: Still an Untapped Opportunity
In all fairness, it’s not like airlines haven’t experimented with Extended Reality.
Over the past few years, we’ve seen glimpses of innovation, but so far, XR offerings in air travel remain rather niche, sporadic, and far from realizing their full potential.
That’s a missed opportunity.
Few industries offer as much “captive audience” dwell time as air travel. Whether at airports or in-flight, passengers spend hours in relatively controlled environments, often looking for ways to pass the time or enhance their journey.
XR could be the key to transforming these passive moments into memorable, engaging experiences.
And while we’re only at the early stages, a few real-world examples show that momentum is starting to build:
- In 2024, our parent company, Lufthansa, partnered with Meta to introduce VR headsets onboard select flights. During the pilot phase of this collaboration, passengers could access immersive entertainment experiences beyond the standard seatback screen, from virtual concerts to 360° travel documentaries, making flying feel less like waiting and more like exploring.
- For many travelers, airports and flights are a source of significant stress. XR could offer meaningful relief. Startups like PsyTech VR, C2C Care, and VR4Content are building virtual environments specifically designed to help travelers manage anxiety through immersive relaxation experiences, meditation rooms, or calming virtual environments before and during flights.
- Airports are starting to tap into XR to enhance the ground experience, too. Manchester Airport, for instance, launched a VR gaming zone featuring an escape room experience.
- XR is also modernizing airport and in-flight retail. Samsonite’s 3D-First Experience lets travelers virtually interact with and explore luggage models before buying. Meanwhile, Perfect Corp. has teamed up with Dufry to offer virtual try-ons for cosmetics and accessories at duty-free stores, enabling a faster and more personalized shopping experience.
Taken together, these examples show that airlines and airports are starting to recognize XR’s potential. But if the cruise industry has taught us anything, it’s that isolated initiatives aren’t enough.
The real opportunity lies in building a cohesive, end-to-end XR ecosystem that transforms the travel experience at every step of the journey.
Final Thoughts: The XR Future Is Waiting
Despite the early momentum, there’s one major hurdle preventing XR from becoming truly mainstream in air travel: the device problem.
Today’s XR experiences largely depend on bulky, often uncomfortable headsets. This is hardly ideal for casual use at airports or on planes. To unlock the full potential of XR in aviation, what’s needed are lightweight, comfortable, and socially acceptable devices that integrate seamlessly into travelers’ daily lives.
The good news? This future is (hopefully) on the horizon.
- We’re seeing early signs with products like the Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses, which offer features like hands-free photography, real-time language translation, and even visual assistance through the Be My Eyes platform.
- This year’s CESo also points to a next-generation approach: functionally sophisticated yet comfortable smart glasses designed for everyday wear are becoming more readily available, one example that garnered recognition were Rayneo’s X2 and X3 smartglasses with functionalities such as real-time language translation, smart navigation and gesture recognition, and voice assistants built on large-language models.
- And Apple, arguably among the most innovative hardware players in the consumer tech space, is rumored to be developing a lighter, more mainstream version of its Vision Pro headset, potentially a true game-changer for mass XR adoption.
In short, the hardware will catch up. It’s a question of when, not if.
Until then, airlines would be wise to do exactly what the cruise industry has done: double down on XR experiments now.
Building experience, understanding passenger behaviors, and embedding XR gradually into the travel journey will ensure airlines are ready to scale when the technology becomes truly frictionless.
The blueprint already exists, just not where most would expect.
