We like to explore unconventional data perspectives to expose the trends shaping the wider Travel and Mobility Tech sector.
And sometimes, the necessary data for that is right in front of our eyes.
Over the past few weeks, we observed something unusual. Our newsletter’s bounce rate, meaning the number of emails that couldn’t be delivered to our subscribers, has gone up 65%.
It has never been higher.
Most bounces happen when an email address doesn’t exist anymore.
My hypothesis: our growing bounce rate mirrors the dramatic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the workforce in our sector. Email addresses disappear because people lose their jobs.
Unsurprisingly, most of our TNMT readers are professionals in the Travel and Mobility Tech sector, and many work in tech startups that were quickly forced to tighten belts and make layoffs (including the most heavily funded players, such as Uber and Airbnb).
Recent job data for the US shows that our Travel and Mobility Tech ecosystem has actually been hit harder by layoffs than any other vertical in startup land.
And the worst is yet to come. Not only for startups. According to IATA, more than 25 million jobs are at risk in the airline industry alone.
Therefore, a quick shout-out to everyone affected. Hang in there!
We hope our market intel helps you better prepare for what’s coming next including the many hidden opportunities that are currently emerging.
